LINE Marketing in Japan: The Channel Foreign Companies Keep Missing (2026)

Ask a Western marketer to name Japan’s most important marketing channel and they’ll say Google, maybe Instagram. Ask a Japanese marketer and the answer is often LINE — the messaging app that roughly 100 million people in Japan use every month (LY Corporation, December 2025), which is to say, almost everyone. LINE is where Japanese consumers talk to friends, pay for coffee, read news, and increasingly hear from brands. It has no equivalent in a US or European playbook, which is exactly why foreign companies underuse it.

This guide covers what LINE is as a marketing channel, how LINE Official Accounts and LINE Ads work (with published pricing), what they’re good for, what they cost relative to alternatives, and how to set them up from outside Japan. Pricing is as published in August 2026 and changes; verify current terms with LINE before committing.

What LINE Is (and Isn’t)

LINE launched in 2011 as a messaging app and became Japan’s default communication layer. Today it spans messaging, LINE Pay and PayPay integration, news, a browser-like mini-app ecosystem, and — for businesses — two marketing products: LINE Official Account (owned channel: your followers, your messages) and LINE Ads (paid reach across LINE’s surfaces). It is operated by LY Corporation, which also runs Yahoo! JAPAN.

What it isn’t: a social network in the Instagram sense. There’s no public feed to “go viral” on. LINE marketing is one-to-one (or one-to-list) communication with people who have opted in — which is precisely why it converts.

LINE Official Account: Japan’s Email List

A LINE Official Account (公式アカウント) lets a business accumulate “friends” (followers) and message them directly. The behavioral difference from email is stark: LINE messages arrive as push notifications in the app people open dozens of times a day. Japanese marketers treat the Official Account as core CRM infrastructure for B2C — coupons, restock alerts, order updates, customer support, loyalty programs.

Plans and pricing (Japan, as published)

Plan Monthly fee Free messages/month Additional messages
Communication ¥0 200 Not available
Light ¥5,000 5,000 Not available
Standard ¥15,000 30,000 Up to ¥3 per message

Source: LINE Developers pricing documentation. “Messages” are counted per reachable recipient per send (one send can bundle up to three bubbles) — a broadcast to 5,000 reachable friends is 5,000 messages — so volume scales with list size. 1:1 chat replies and auto-responses are free and don’t consume the quota; the quotas apply to broadcasts, step (drip) messages and API pushes. Note that the Light and Standard plans are not offered in some markets outside Japan; for a Japan-targeted account, the Japan plans apply.

What the Official Account is good for

  • Retention and repeat purchase — coupons and restock/new-arrival messages to opted-in buyers, the highest-ROI use.
  • Customer support — Japanese customers increasingly prefer chat over email/phone; a LINE chat line is a trust signal.
  • Rich menus and segmentation — a persistent tappable menu at the bottom of the chat, plus tags/segments for targeted sends.
  • Automation — the Messaging API supports bots, CRM integration and triggered messages; many third-party tools layer on top.
  • Lead capture for B2B — less common, but useful for events, webinars and long nurture cycles where Japanese buyers won’t open English-style drip email.

LINE Ads (Now LY Ads): Paid Reach Where Meta Isn’t

Platform note: on April 1, 2026, LY Corporation merged LINE Ads into the unified LY Ads Display Ads platform; legacy LINE Ads stops delivery around late October 2026. The inventory and audiences below are unchanged — you now buy them through LY Ads (details in our Advertising in Japan guide).

Ads run across LINE’s surfaces (Talk list, LINE NEWS, LINE VOOM and others) with demographic, interest and behavioral targeting, plus retargeting and lookalike audiences built from your Official Account friends or site visitors. Two practical facts for foreign advertisers:

  • Self-serve accounts pay by credit card with no spend commitment; agency accounts may carry minimums. Practical testing budgets start around a few hundred thousand yen per month, but nothing forces that floor.
  • The audience is different. LINE reaches demographics — older users, non-Instagram users, regional Japan — that Meta and even Google Display touch less. For mass-market B2C it is often the second paid channel after search.

The highest-leverage format for most brands is “friend ads” — ads whose goal is to add followers to your Official Account — because every follower acquired becomes a free, repeatable retention touchpoint.

A LINE Strategy for Foreign Companies

  1. Open the Official Account early — even before launch, so every Japanese touchpoint (site, packaging, marketplace inserts, events) can carry a “add friend” QR code.
  2. Give a reason to add — a first-purchase coupon, exclusive restock alerts, or Japanese-language support. “Follow us” alone doesn’t work.
  3. Message with restraint — Japanese users block accounts that over-message; 2–4 broadcasts a month plus triggered messages is typical. A block is a permanent loss of that customer as a channel (blocked users are no longer delivered to, and don’t consume your message quota — your “target reach” is friends minus blocks).
  4. Localize properly — LINE messages are intimate; awkward Japanese is more jarring here than on a web page (see Japanese Localization).
  5. Add paid LINE reach once you have a list — use friend ads and retargeting via LY Ads; measure cost per friend and downstream purchase rate, not clicks.
  6. Connect to the rest of the funnel — search and content bring discovery (Japanese SEO, Digital Marketing in Japan); LINE keeps the customers you win.

Setting Up From Abroad

  • Basic Official Accounts can be created by foreign businesses via LINE for Business; a Japanese phone number or business verification may be needed for certain features.
  • Verified accounts (blue badge) are granted after LINE’s screening process; verification unlocks in-app search visibility and additional features. Foreign companies without a Japanese presence should expect to work through a LINE sales partner or agency for verification and for some ad products.
  • Japanese-language operations are required for anything customer-facing — account name, rich menu, greetings, replies. Plan for a native speaker or agency to run it.
  • Agencies and tools: a large Japanese ecosystem of LINE marketing tools and certified partners exists; for a foreign entrant, a partner that offers bilingual reporting is worth the margin.

LINE plans, pricing, feature availability and account-verification requirements are as published in August 2026 and change periodically; confirm current terms with LINE for Business before budgeting. This article is general information, not a commitment by LINE or LY Corporation.

LINE vs. the Alternatives

Paid reach to non-Meta demographics Strong — Younger/urban skew
Customer support channel Expected by Japanese customers Acceptable Not typical

Frequently Asked Questions

What is LINE and why does it matter for marketing in Japan?

LINE is Japan’s dominant messaging app, used by roughly 100 million people a month (LY Corporation, December 2025) — about four in five people. For marketers it offers an owned channel (LINE Official Account, comparable to an email list with much higher engagement) and a paid channel (LINE Ads) that reaches demographics other platforms miss.

How much does a LINE Official Account cost?

In Japan: the Communication plan is free with 200 messages a month; Light is ¥5,000/month for 5,000 messages; Standard is ¥15,000/month for 30,000 messages with additional messages up to ¥3 each (Standard only). One broadcast to 1,000 friends counts as 1,000 messages. 1:1 chat replies are free and unlimited.

Can a foreign company use LINE for marketing without a Japanese entity?

Yes for a basic Official Account and self-serve ads (card payment, no minimum spend; LINE inventory is bought via LY Ads since April 2026). Verified accounts require passing LINE’s screening; foreign companies without a Japanese presence typically go through a LINE sales partner for verification and some ad features. All customer-facing content must be in native Japanese, so plan for local operations.

Is LINE useful for B2B companies?

Less central than for B2C. It works for events, webinars and long nurture cycles where Japanese buyers won’t engage with English-style email drips, and as a support channel. For most B2B entrants, search and content come first; LINE joins when there’s a list worth keeping warm.

How often should I message LINE followers?

Sparingly: Japanese users block over-messaging accounts quickly. Two to four broadcasts a month plus triggered messages (order updates, restock alerts) is a common cadence. Every message should carry a reason to stay subscribed — a coupon, useful information, or a genuinely new product.
